Dynamic synchrotron-based microtomography of human tympanic membrane motions

DOI

This data collection contains dynamic microtomography scans of the tympanic membrane from three fresh-frozen human temporal bones under acoustic stimulation. The data were acquired at the TOMCAT Beamline X02DA of the Swiss Light Source (Paul Scherrer Institute, Villigen, Switzerland). Additionally, we provide spatial transformations across the phases of motion determined via non-rigid registration to quantify tympanic membrane motion.

Three temporal bones (referred to as Fresh1, Fresh7, and Fresh8) were scanned under the following conditions: * Fresh1 (right ear) stimulated at 127 Hz and 126, 141, and 151 dB SPL. * Fresh7 (right ear) stimulated at 128, 256, and 512 Hz and 120 dB SPL. * Fresh8 (left ear) stimulated at 128 Hz and 120 dB SPL.

The microtomography datasets have pixel size of 2.75 um and have been reconstructed in phase contrast for 10 phases of motion. Additionally, non-rigid registration results that allow for calculation of tympanic membrane motion are provided.

Image files are provided in metaimage format and registration parameters are based on the format used by elastix/transformix. Note that the full resolution data (2.75 um pixel size) was given a pixel spacing of 0.25 in the metaimage header information.

For each scan, two datasets are available: * Dynamic microtomography reconstructions over 10 phases covering the tympanic membrane. Additionally, a segmentation of the tympanic membrane and a coarse mask for tympanic membrane registration are provided. The tympanic membrane segmentations from the 4x downsampled data are also provided, which are the basis for meshes used for motion analysis. Where available, 4x downsampled microtomography datasets are provided. * Spatial transformations determined via non-rigid registration to map coordinates from the reference phase to all other phases. Additionally, registration logs are provided, which include a full description of the registration parameters as well as convergence curves. Manually determined landmark pairs are also provided where available for validation.

For the registration files, note that the following reference phases were used: * Fresh1 127 Hz 126 dB - 0 * Fresh1 127 Hz 141 dB - 0 * Fresh1 127 Hz 151 dB - 0 * Fresh7 128 Hz 120 dB - 3 * Fresh7 256 Hz 120 dB - 0 * Fresh7 512 Hz 120 dB - 3 * Fresh8 128 Hz 120 dB - 3
