Magnetic and charge ordering, superstructures and diffuse scattering in de-intercalated sodium cobaltate

DOI

Sodium Cobaltate has a complex phase diagram, exhibiting various phenomena and a kaleidoscope of superlattice diffraction patterns as the concentration of sodium is varied. It is an important material for thermoelectric applications and shows strongly correlated behavior. We have successfully de-intercalated a high quality single crystal into the composition Na0.5CoO2 - an important phase that shows long range ordering of the sodium ions in stripes of di-vacancy clusters. This phase exhibits magnetic ordering at 87K and a charge ordering transition at 53K, there is also an unsolved superlattice phase that occurs at low temperature. We propose to use single crystal Laue diffraction on SXD to study the magnetic and charge ordering in the system, and also to solve the low temperature superlattice and to attempt to observe diffuse scattering from the disordering of sodium ions above 400K.
