Search for Dirac multipoles in CuB2O6. College 5A (5-11) and 5B (5-31, 5-41).

DOI

Recently, diverse optic experiments on CuB2O6 have led SW Lovesey to propose a Cu orbital ground state with mixed 3d and 4p wave functions. The 3d-4p mixing is allowed because of the absent inversion symmetry on the Cu-sites. The proposed ground state would allow Dirac orbital anapoles in addition to ordinary axial magnetic dipole moments. We wish to reinvestigate the magnetic structure of CuB2O6 in search of these Dirac anapoles and propose to study 1) the powder diffraction pattern as function of temperature to confirm the symmetry of the space group for the chemical structure, the (ordinary) magnetic structure and to screen for potential additional intensity not captured by the magnetic structure 2) a single crystal with polarised diffraction in a vertical field in order to test the theoretical predictions concerning the symmetry of the ordinary magnetic structure and the order of Dirac anapoles. For part 1) we ask for 1d of D20, for part 2) for 4d of IN20.
