Theater Brût

DOI

Theater Brût was founded in 1999 by theater educationalist Gerhard Bruckner and eleven actors with mental disabilities who live in the residential units of the association "Lebenshilfe Passau." Lebenshilfe Passau, public funding, and private donations finance the project. The very characteristics of the actors and their traits are the basis and the trigger for creative processes. Through improvisation and scenic exploration of autobiographical elements of the actors, Theater Brût creates pieces that are later performed. The main goal is to produce high-quality artistic theater pieces with a message that will endure with their message outside the context of "disability." Theater Brût stands for exploiting one's creative potential and bringing it to the stage; in short, the passion for theater. The group meets for weekly rehearsals in which they deal with a previously agreed theme using the methods of playful improvisation, mask-making, and object theater. The public performances are a great motivation for the actors to stay focused and work on long-term projects.

Gerhard Bruckner organizes workshops on "Introduction to theater work with people with mental disabilities" and "Mask building." Furthermore, he has a teaching assignment for "School Play/Scenic Play" at the University of Passau. In 1999, Theater Brût began with a mask performance in which the actors transformed themselves into whimsical, peculiar, and ragged creatures through self-designed masks and matching costumes. The same year, they presented their mask performance at the "Ökofest" festival in Passau. In 2002, they awarded the media prize "Bobby" of the Bundesvereinigung der Lebenshilfe to Dr. Peter Radtke. The group's tragicomedy "Muuuh!" was first performed in 2015 and was the last major project of the group so far. It is mainly based on texts by Georg Paulmichl. Theater Brût has been invited to numerous national and international theater festivals in Germany and Austria (e.g. Kultur vom Rande, Reutlingen; Ganz besonderes Theaterfestival, Landau/Pfalz; Spleen, Graz; WALSER HERBST, Vorarlberg und grenzgänger-Theaterfestival, München).
