The maximum operating temperature of standard ISIS furnaces with vanadium elements and shields is limited to 1000C (1100C under exceptional circumstances). The ultra high-temperature Riso furnace (2000C max with tantalum shields and elements) has been modified to allow the use of vanadium shields and elements to a maximum working temperature of 1500C. This will allow the use of HRPD in its conventional high resolution mode to operate at this working temperature. Using tantalum in the furnace only allows the use of the 90 degree detectors (modest resolution) due to strong contaminant Bragg reflections in the backscattering data.
