Raw seismic refraction data recorded during RV POLARSTERN cruise PS64, Arctic Ocean, profile AWI-20030400

DOI

As part of RV Polarstern cruise PS64, four seismic refraction profiles were collected across the East-Greenland margin to study the crustal architecture and tectonic evolution of the margin. The acquired data set covers data from a total of 126 stations, including 17 on land stations. The northernmost line AWI-20030200 crossed the margin at 76°N to gain detailed information on the evolution of the Greenland Escarpment. The other three lines (AWI-20030300, AWI-20030400, and AWI20030500) more in the south were located in the prolongation of the Ardencaple, Godthaab and Kaiser Franz Josef fjords. Here, in addition to the ocean bottom seismometers, stations were deployed onshore to have a better image on the structure of a pronounced negative magnetic anomaly. Seismic energy was generated with an array of 5x9L airguns and a 32L airgun. The refracted signals were collected by three components ocean bottom seismometers (OBS), ocean bottom hydrophones (OBH), and onshore by three components seismometers (REFTEK) provided by GEOMAR and AWI. Profiling started on 8 August 2003 at 76.7933°N, -12.9672°W, and ended on 14 September 2003 at 73.5489°N, -24.6630°E. Along each profile between 25 and 35 recording stations were deployed. All instruments were successfully recovered after finishing the experiment. Survey information and detailed data acquisition parameters for the profiles are documented in the expedition report (Jokat, 2004) and in a metadata-file listed below. The present data set provides raw data concerning the refraction seismic profile AWI-20030400. 14 OBS, 15 OBH and 4 Reftek stations were deployed along a 322 km long line. The data set comprises for the whole profile (a) the scanned field protocol, (b) a table with all compiled metadata and information on the stations, (c) navigational data with shot point positions, (d) navigational data with deployment-positions of OBS, OBH and Reftek stations along profiles, and (e) an overall ReadMe-file with information on the whole seismic refraction experiment. For each station the set comprises (f) original raw data files (in mbl, mbs or reftek- format depending on type of data logger), (g) raw data converted to pascal-format with send2pas software, (h) auxiliary data and (i) log-files.
