Interaction of keratins with biosurfactants studied by SANS: effect of arginine binding

DOI

This proposal constitutes part of our ongoing study towards understanding how keratin, an important protein component of hair and skin, interacts with biosurfactants using SANS, focusing on the assessment of the impact of amino acid binding on the modification of keratin properties (charges and hydration) and subsequent capacity to interact with surfactants.. On the basis of ongoing work on the binding of SDS and C12TAB with keratin, we propose to study how rhamnolipids interact with keratin and keratin modified by different amino acids, thereby affecting the complexation and structural aggregation. Deuterated rhamnolipids will be used to help enhance interfacial structural resolution across the aggregates formed.
