Biogenic silica concentrations in Miocene sediments from ODP Hole 145-884B in the subpolar North Pacific

We measured biogenic silica concentrations in sediment samples from ODP Site 884. Between 30 and 40 mg of dry, pulverized sediment samples were digested in 40 mL of 0.5 M NaOH in a water bath maintained at 85 degrees C for precisely 4 hours. Silicon concentrations were then measured using a modified version of the method of Russell & Johnson (2005) adapted to photometric analysis using an Automated Discrete Analyzer SmartChem 200 from KPM Analytics. To calculate sedimentary concentrations of biogenic silica, biogenic silica was assumed to be 8% water by mass.
