Blaumeier-Atelier

Blaumeier-Atelier is a remarkable inclusive art project located in Bremen, Germany. It serves as a creative hub where over 250 individuals, both with and without disabilities, and those with experience in psychiatry, convene every week to participate in a wide array of artistic workshops. These workshops encompass theatre, mask-building, music, photography, and literature, all with the ultimate aim of showcasing the outcomes through captivating productions, concerts, exhibitions, and lectures. At the heart of Blaumeier's mission is the recognition of each individual's unique abilities and needs. This approach centers on nurturing talents and discovering newfound capabilities.

Importantly, Blaumeier's artistic endeavors deliberately steer clear of categorizing individuals based on disability or past experiences in psychiatric institutions. Instead, they focus on each person's potential, rejecting the notion of "deficits" and emphasizing the rich possibilities inherent in every individual. While inclusivity is the foundational principle guiding the group's artistic work, it is intentionally not highlighted in their production presentations.

The origins of this project can be traced back to 1986, when the closure of the local psychiatric facility, Klinik Kloster Blankenburg, prompted students from the University of Oldenburg and former patients to establish this transformative initiative. Since its inception, individuals with and without disabilities have joined forces to create art, leading to the expansion of the organization to include photography and literary workshops. This evolution has propelled the project into becoming a fully-fledged cultural institution, complete with permanent staff members, internships, dedicated volunteers, renowned exhibitions, and international acclaim.

Blaumeier-Atelier has made a significant impact by touring nationally and internationally, holding exhibitions, and even participating in film production. Since 2015, the group has been an integral part of the prestigious international theatre festival "Mittenmang" hosted by the Theater Bremen, further solidifying its reputation by receiving multiple (international) awards for its exceptional work.
