Vorarlberg (Austria) Glacier outlines, 2017-2020-2022-2023

This dataset compiles glacier outlines for the Austrian state of Vorarlberg for 2017, 2020, 2022, and 2023. Outlines were mapped using high resolution, multi-temporal orthophotos and elevation change data derived from digital elevation models available for 2017 and 2023. The aerial imagery and topographic data were provided by the regional government of Vorarlberg via their geodata portal https://vogis.vorarlberg.at/. New outlines of glacial features were mapped manually using the outlines from the third Austrian glacier inventory (GI 3) as a starting point (for glaciers in the Silvretta range, outlines from a regional inventory from 2017 were used as a starting point). In cases of fragmentation, the ID number of the original glacier was maintained. The 2020 and 2022 boundaries were mapped from orthophotos. In 2017 and 2023, orthophotos as well as elevation change information and hillshades derived from the 2017 and 2023 DEMs were used. For the 2023 outlines, individual glacier fragments (multi-polygons associated with the same glacier id number) were assessed and categorized for criteria such as presence of debris cover and crevasses.
