This proposal requests neutron diffraction beamtime to study a series of novel metal fluorophosphates and acid pyrophosphates with potential as ionic conductors. Fluorophosphates are rare but our recent studies have identified a range of strontium containing phases. In particular, SrPO3F has been found to adopt the monazite structure (LaPO4). Previously Sr doped LaPO4 has been shown to possess significant proton conductivity but this was reported to be limited by Sr doping not being feasible above 5%. We have produced mixed phosphate/fluorophosphates precursors spanning the full solid solution between Sr and La (i.e. La1-xSrx(PO4)1-x(PO3F)x), which when hydrolysed provide high proton containing monazite phases. We also request time to confirm the structures of two newly synthesised magnesium acid pyrophosphates, MgH2P2O7, which possess mobile and exchangeable protons.
