Code for Küpfer et al. 2025 (NHESS): Impact-based temporal clustering of multiple meteorological hazard types in southwestern Germany

DOI

This code is the basis of the publication "Impact-based temporal clustering of multiple meteorological hazard types in southwestern Germany" to be published in Natural Hazards and Earth System Sciences. The scripts range from identifying events with fixed or varying durations to the identification of the degree of clustering as well as cluster periods.

Prerequisites: Daily timeseries of (impact) data. 1_event_identification: Allows to identify distinct events from daily resolved timeseries. 2_precipitation_categorization and 2_wind_categorization: Allows to create distinct meteorological categories from generalized "flood" or "wind" impact data (large-scale storms, convective gusts, stratiform precipitation, mixed precipitation, and convective precipitation). 3_combination_hazards: Allows to decluster hazards so no artificial clusters on the scale of days are created 4_RipleyK and 4_counting: Allow to assess the degree of clustering vs. the number and timing of clusters, respectively
