Snow and ice surface photogrammetry images collected during RV POLARSTERN cruise PS149

DOI

During the Polarstern cruise PS149 (Nicolaus, 2026) from July to August 2025 in the central Arctic Ocean a standard digital camera (Nikon D5200, sometimes also Olympus E-M5) and a set of reference targets were used to take sets of images almost every day of the 11 ice stations, each of which lasted for 2-4 days (in total, 28 days are covered). From this, the surface topography and roughness at the centimeter scale can be retrieved (multi-image photogrammetry/structure from motion), which is an important parameter for the microwave emission and scattering. The reference targets were distributed around a small (around 0.35 m x 0.7 m) area, and pictures were taken from different angles with fixed focus length. All measurements were done within the vicinity of the footprint of the onboard microwave radiometers installed for the VAMPIRE project (that is, in about 25 m distance to the port bow of Polarstern). The dataset consists of the raw measurements (the photos as .jpg files).
