The children in each age group were given a battery of tests and the results related to detailed information on the schools attended and to background, biographical and personal information on each child. In the case of Welsh children, linguistic information was also included.

Variables as for 60005, with the following additions: Test information also includes: a Welsh version of the Number Concept Test, and a 30 item test of Welsh Reading Comprehension similar in form and content to the English Reading Test and similarly administered. Background information on child also includes: language spoken at home, and a finer definition of parental occupation (11 categories, plus social rating). Information on the school includes: teaching language employed and number of subjects taught in Welsh.
One-stage stratified or systematic random sample
schools as the sampling unit. The schools were those on the Ministry of Education list of maintained and assisted schools in Wales effective in January 1958. The strata were defined by geographical regions, type of area and type of school. The schools were chosen from the list by using the fixed sampling interval appropriate to each stratum. When a school was selected all children in the age range at least seven years old but not yet ten years old were sampled
