We propose to study cobalt nitride films using PNR with a view to their use in spin injection & spin engineering applications. Such systems have had little attention in the literature, yet comparable materials show great technological promise. Recent theoretical calculations on Co4N suggest it should behave similarly to Fe4N which has good properties for spin injection including an enhanced magnetisation. Experimental measurements of the magnetic moments, however, are not available. In addition, recent spin engineering studies in our group have lead to a method of growing Co2N by implanting Co films with N+. In these materials a knowledge of the magnetic moments and interface roughness is vital to check theoretical predictions & optimise the films properties. This information as obtained from PNR will be complemented by measurements of the magnetic anisotropy & spin injection efficiency.
