Diffuse magnetic scattering in frustrated fcc antiferromagnet MnS2

DOI

The fcc lattice is inherently frustrated with regard to antiferromagnetic ordering, and therefore exhibit many different types of antiferromagnetic phases. Nearest-neighbor Ising antiferromagnets on the fcc lattice have zero-temperature ground states with large degeneracy that are not just due to symmetry. At any nonzero temperature however fluctuations break degeneracy: entropy favors the ground state(s) about which the density of states of low energy excitations is the greatest producing a well-defined long-range order. Villain et al. called this phenomenon “ ordering due to disorder” and noted that both thermal and quenched disorder could induce long-range order. The fcc antiferromagnetic semiconductor MnS2 crystallizes with the pyrite-type crystal structure. Our test measurements gave us preliminary information, but now we wish to complete the study of diffuse magnetic scattering on the frustrated AF MnS2 by mapping the complete diffuse scattering in (hk0) plane on the diffractometer D7. We request 5 days of neutron beam time on D7 for this purpose (2 temperatures 1.1TN and 1.2 TN).
