This experiment aims to obtain experimental data to validate crystal plasticity modelling of a metal with a complex, anisotropic, crystal structure. We propose to measure the evolution of lattice strain and texture with deformation of coarse-grained cast alpha-uranium under both tension and compression during loading and unloading. The onset of crystal plasticity will be obtained via the deviation from linearity of the stress vs. lattice strain for the different families of grain orientations. Intergranular strains will be calculated and compared with existing data from finer-grained wrought material. We will also investigate the suitability of the technique to detect the formation of deformation twins in uranium by identifying lattice relaxation.
