Magnetic structure of the beta-phase of MnAs

MnAs is a promising room-temperature ferromagnetic material for spintronic applications and magnetologic devices, as it can be grown epitaxially on the most relevant semiconductor substrates. Ferromagnetic alpha-MnAs has a hexagonal NiAs structure and transforms in the bulk at 40°C into the orthorhombic beta-phase of still unknown magnetic order. In thin films, the phase transition is continuous and the detailed knowledge of the magnetic nature of beta-MnAs thus of utmost importance. Our proposal aims at finally unravelling the magnetic nature of beta-MnAs ¿ which has been reported to be either paramagnetic or antiferromagnetic with a lack of long-range order.
