EEG and Self-Paced Reading of Natural, Dutch Texts (Towards a computational model of reading (TCMR))

DOI

Electroencephalogram (EEG) data and reading times from a self-paced reading experiment using eight medium-length, natural Dutch texts. The data was recorded from 71 native Dutch speakers.

More information on the corpus can be found in the README.md file. To better navigate the repository, press "Tree" below.

PsychoPy, 2022.2.5

Data files Raw EEG The EEG files are named “TCMR_EEG_.bdf”. Behavioral data Two csv-files and one json-file was obtained for every participant. These files are named as following:

“TCMR_rt__.csv”, “TCMR_responses__.csv”, and “TCMR_participant_info_.json”

where TCMR_rt_.csv contains the reading times, TCMR_responses_.csv contains the responses of text questions (i.e., familiarity and comprehension), and TCMR_participant_info_.json contains the demographic and language ability questions.

Supplemental material Consent form and information letter (Empty) consent form, information letter (read before signing consent form and beginning the experiment), and debrief letter (read after ended experiment).

Experimental texts The 8 experimental texts and 2 practice texts used in the study along with an excel file containing information on the texts.

Questionnaire and questions Questions (demographics and language abilities) from the questionnaire in the beginning of the experiment, familiarity questions, and comprehension questions.

Code book Code book with description of the EEG triggers.

Preprocessed Data Data for reproducing analysis. The folder contains three csv-files:

“mean_amplitude.csv”, with the mean amplitude in the N400 and P600 time windows (for selected channels). “rt_eeg_triggers.csv”, with the reading times extracted as the time between EEG triggers. “erp_lp.csv”, with the ERPs over all participants for words that are < 25% quantile for log-probabilities (low_lp), < 75% quantile (high_lp), and between the 25%-75% quantile (med_lp).

Structure data package The EEG data and behavioral data files are connected by the participant number as indicated by the title.

Production date: 15-05-2024 – 21-10-2024 Method: Data collected in an EEG experiment. The experiment was implemented in PsychoPy (see https://github.com/saraoe/natural-stories-dutch/tree/main/experiment) and the EEG data was recorded using BioSemi. Universe: 71 healthy, adult participants (47 female, mean age 20.31) partook in the study. All participants were native Dutch speakers, had normal or corrected-to-normal vision, had never had any traumatic head injury, had not been diagnosed with dyslexia or any learning disability, and were right-handed. Country / Nation: the Netherlands.
