Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) of sediment core PAH_POPEI_VC2B

DOI

The Iberian Margin, located in the North Atlantic mid-latitudes at the western edge of the European continent, is a crucial area for climate and oceanographic reconstructions. As part of the PTDC/CTA-CLI/2884/2021- Impact of climate warming in the coastal upwelling system and primary production off Portugal: a study linking classical and emerging proxies - ICW3P project, this study presents multi-proxy records from three inner-shelf sediment sequences collected from sites in the northwestern region, off the Douro River mouth (POS287-06G), west of the Tagus River mouth (POS-26B and -26G), and along the Algarve coast in front of Faro (POPEI-VC2B). The Portuguese western coast marks the northernmost boundary of the Canary Current upwelling system and experiences seasonal (May to September) wind-driven coastal upwelling. The Eastern Boundary Upwelling Systems (EBUS) are among the most productive regions in the global ocean, playing a vital role in climate regulation and supporting both local and global fisheries. Sediment records from the western coast were collected using box-core and gravity coring systems during the Poseidon Cruise PO287 in 2002, while the Algarve core POPEI-VC2B was obtained with a vibro-core sampler during the POPEI Cruise in 2008. As part of a multi-proxy approach aimed at evaluating different sources of organic matter to the Iberian Margin, with the goal of reconstructing primary productivity and phytoplankton community variability over the past 1,000 years, pyrogenic polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (pyPAHs) were analyzed at the Marine and Environmental Studies Lab of PUC-Rio, during 2025, using gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (GC-MS).
