This entry serves as a record of the study and does not include papers or conference proceedings, which are hosted in the Publications Repository.Dr Joana Geraldi, lecturer at the School of Construction and Project Management and Dr Mario Arlt, Global Practice Leader, ABB, have been awarded a Project Management Institute research grant for the research project "Improving Portfolio Decision Making through Effective Visualization of Information".PMI grants are notoriously difficult to win, and the PMI, which is the largest professional association in project management, only awards five a year.The project will explore the impact of visual representations in portfolio decision making, contributing firstly to the improvement of portfolio decision-making, and secondly to the understanding of the role of visual representations in management.Visual representations are all around us, be it the productivity charts in the production floor or the strategic maps in the management board; they are an intrinsic part of managing. They play an important role in decisions, as it leverages human natural perception abilities, improves our ability to process information, and thereby helps overcoming cognitive limitations and developing a shared understanding of available data. Despite its importance, visual representations have received limited attention of academics.
