Magnetic excitation spectrum of the Spin-1, Honeycomb Antiferromagnet BaNi2V2O8

DOI

We plan to perform the first investigation of the excitation spectrum of the near ideal honeycomb antiferromagnet with XY anisotropy, BaNi2V2O8. The honeycomb antiferromagnet is interesting for a number of reasons, firstly it is a two-dimensional antiferromagnet with lower co-ordination number (only three nearest neighbours) compared to the square lattice. Secondly a Kosterlitz-thouless phase transition is predicted in such a system and has indeed been observed in BaNi2V2O8 using ESR measurement s. In this proposal we plan to investigate the magnetic excitation spectrum of BaNi2V2O8 above and below Neel and Kosterlitz-Thouless transition temperatures.
