Storfjordrenna biofilms

At an arctic hydrate site south of the Svalbard archipelago, sediments are characterized by steady methane flux. In two sediment cores recovered from this sites, we found pockets in the sediment at depth of the sulfate-methane-transition zone, which were filled with macroscopically visible biofilms. We amplified bacterial and archaeal 16S rRNA gene sequences from biofilms.
