Replication Data for: Free-ranging cattle and the return of the wolf

DOI

Wildlife camera recordings of two wolf attacks on free-ranging Galloway cattle The dataset contains five 30s wildlife camera recordings of two wolf attacks on free-ranging Galloway cattle in a nature reserve in Drenthe, the Netherlands. In this area, the conservation managers installed 5 wildlife cameras (type: Browning Spec Ops Elite HP4; No Glow) from October 2022 onwards with the hope to monitor wolf-Galloway interactions. For this, five specific areas were selected where the likelihood of encountering wolf-Galloway interactions would be highest: these included two resting sites at the forest-edge where Galloways regularly spend the night. The Galloways tend to use these sites for a number of consecutive nights and then move on to other resting sites throughout the year. In each site, one wildlife camera was attached to a tree at ca. 120 cm height, with a wide view over the study location. Memory cards (and batteries) were replaced and checked weekly. The cameras were set to make 30s movies, with the minimal interval between events (1s). Cameras switch to night vision (infrared, no-glow to minimize impact on wildlife) in the dark hours. The recordings were checked for clear signs of wolf-cattle interactions, i.e. when both occurred in the same frame of the camera, or 5 seconds before or after appearance of one or the other. Two individual wolf attacks (attempts) were captured which occurred on 4 and 9 April 2023 (both at night time).
