A direct measurement of the spin accumulation in a magnetic nanostructure is a key requirement to the theoretical and ultimately technological exploitation of picosecond magnetic reversal through spin torque phenomena. We aim to measure the spin accumulation resulting from diffusive electron scattering mechanisms as a first step towards the more ambitious study of polarisation induced through electron injection into nano-pillars. Using multilayers with matched layer thicknesses we propose to spatially resolve the polarisation, and hence the spin accumulation, in high susceptibility materials (Mn) when they are in contact with Co.
