Environmental profiles of municipalities in metropolitan France – MRC-PE Project
Context
This dataset was developed as part of the MRC-PE research project (Chronic Kidney Disease – Environmental Profiles), selected in 2023 through a joint call for projects by the Health Data Hub and the French Ministry of Ecological Transition and Territorial Cohesion (GD4H program).
The scientific objective of the MRC-PE project is to investigate, at the national scale, the association between territorial environmental profiles and the incidence of chronic kidney disease (CKD), while exploring the potential mediating role of diabetes, hypertension, and other socio-environmental determinants (social disadvantage, healthcare accessibility).
This multidisciplinary project relies on the linkage of large-scale health data (REIN registry, SNDS) with a comprehensive set of spatialized environmental indicators.
Dataset content
This dataset provides a detailed description of the outdoor environment at the municipal level across metropolitan France (excluding Corsica).
Spatial scale: municipality (n = 34,476, administrative boundaries from IGN – 2021 edition)
Number of indicators produced: 150 spatialized indicators
Data sources: 18 datasets (15 openly accessible; 3 available upon request)
Covered themes: (1) Contamination levels of environmental media (air, soil); (2) Proximity to emission sources; (3) Land use; (4) Agricultural practices; (5) Environmental amenities; (6) Climate.
Detailed processing protocols and R scripts used to build each indicator are available on the following GitHub repository:

This repository also provides critical information on source data quality, interpretative limitations of the indicators, and general usage recommendations. For appropriate use of the dataset, it is therefore strongly recommended to consult this additional documentation beforehand.
