Crystal Field Excitations in the Borderline Spin Ice Pr2Zr2O7

DOI

The title compound is expected to be a spin ice close to an instability which stabilises magnetic order. We can determine its spin Hamiltonian precisely by measuring the crystal field excitations. This will allow an interpretation of its properties and incidentally assess the moment size, which will enable us to estimate the size of single crystals needed for more elaborate experiments. (Note that bulk measurements cannot do this sufficiently accurately).
