Spin Dynamics in the isotopically enriched spin ice 162Dy2Ti2O7

DOI

In an attempt to study the dynamics of Dy2Ti2O7 measured using muons we have made a sample of 162Dy2Ti2O7 where the 161 and 164 isotopes are reduced to a minimum (max. 0.6% of our sample). A consequence of this enrichment is our sample has very few nuclear spins. Dysprosium has 5 stable isotopes and only 2 (161 and 163) have a nuclear spin, this results in the hyperfine interactions being an order of magnitude weaker than those in similar holmium compounds. Initial neutron scattering results on our 162Dy2Ti2O7 sample would suggest this is sample is static. We now want to perform (repeat) some muon studies on Dy2Ti2O7 and 162Dy2Ti2O7 to confirm the lack of persistent spin dynamics at 50 mK in the sample with no nuclear spins. This experiment may also highlight the role of hyperfine interactions on the relaxation of muons implanted into pyrochlores.
