Sedimentary and geochemical analyses from 14 sediment cores of Lake Iznik, NW Turkey

DOI

Here we present high-resolution XRF, grain-size, loss on ignition and glass shard geochemical analysis from sediment cores at fourteen different locations in Lake Iznik. These cores, with lengths between 1.46 and 3.57 m, were collected in April and July 2019 using a UWITEC hammer gravity corer. One of the aims was to differentiate earthquake-triggered deposits from flood-related deposits. To address this question, we used both sedimentology and geochemistry analyses to discuss the different depositional mechanisms and highlight different sources and/or processes. Then, we studied the potential spatial variation in the facies and geochemical signatures of a specific earthquake-induced deposit within the lake subbasins. The occurrence of previously geochemically identified tephra allowed refinement of the age-depth model by comparison with previously established volcanic eruption history (Roeser et al., 2012; doi:10.1016/j.quaint.2012.06.006).
