Stress Profiles Using Directional Statistics (SPUDS)

DOI

A Python Toolkit for Analysis of Stress Orientation With Depth

A Python-based workflow for calculating, visualizing, and interpreting stress orientations along borehole axis using directional statistics.
The tool extracts SHmax and Shmin (maximum and Minimum horizontal stress) orientations from results files generated with ILAT, SAC, FAC, and convert them to SHmax orientation, applies magnetic corrections, performs fixed interval or moving-window statistics, and produces publication-ready plots:

  • SHmax vs. depth (with polygon or line uncertainty envelopes)
  • Discrete R² color‑coded confidence visualization
  • Rose diagrams (with mean SHmax orientaion as arrows)
  • histograms of feature count over depth
