While she is primarily preoccupied with herself, her guilt, and her fears, she fails to notice that not everything is well within her own family. Odprejo se vrata (“The doors open”) could be described as a transgenerational novel, suitable for older teenagers and adults. Two narrative threads intertwine throughout the story, both seen through the eyes of the protagonist — one reaching back into her youth, the other unfolding in the present as we follow her life as a married woman and mother of two children. They are connected by the sense of guilt awakened in the narrator by memories of her childhood friend Nejc. This fluid, highly readable, witty, bright, and optimistic narrative opens themes familiar to all of us: family relationships, growing up, fear, friendship, and addiction.
