Bien que peu connus et souvent invisibles, les engagements des seniors pour le climat sont importants. De nombreux seniors s’engagent en rejoignant des associations telles que « Grands-parents pour le climat » ou en adaptant leurs modes de vie afin de réduire leur empreinte carbone. Cette recherche s’intéresse à la fois aux antécédents à ces engagements et à leurs conséquences pour le bien-être. Nous postulons que malgré les obstacles à vivre ce type d’engagement dans une société de consommation, leurs effets sont positifs pour certaines dimensions du bien-être. Ils permettraient en particulier de renforcer le sentiment d’accomplissement de soi des personnes qui s’engagent et d’améliorer leur bien-être social. Pour ce qui est des antécédents à l’engagement, notre hypothèse est qu’en plus de facteurs structurels, le type de préoccupation associé au changement climatique joue un rôle essentiel.

Although little known and often invisible, the engagements of senior citizens to the climate are important. Many seniors are getting involved by joining pro-environmental associations or by adapting their lifestyles to reduce their carbon footprint. This research focuses on both the antecedents of these forms of political participation and their consequences for well-being. We hypothesize that despite the barriers that a consumer society poses to such activities, their effects are positive for some dimensions of well-being. In particular, we hypothesize they would enhance the sense of self-fulfilment of those who engage and improve their social well-being. In terms of antecedents to engagement, our hypothesis is that, in addition to structural factors, the type of concern associated with climate change plays a key role. To test these hypotheses, we have collected survey data on senior citizens environmental attitudes, their everyday pro-environmental behaviors, their political participation and their well-being.
