Dataset of mechanical traits of standing trees in Alpine protective forests

DOI

A non-destructive pull-and-release protocol was applied to standing trees across different sites in the French Alps, including both healthy trees and trees affected by disturbances such as bark beetle outbreaks and wildfire. The dataset covers currently six tree species—Abies alba, Fagus sylvatica, Larix decidua, Picea abies, Pinus sylvestris and Quercus sp.—and provides measurements to estimate trunk Young’s modulus of elasticity, the root-anchor stiffness, and the trees’ natural sway frequency. These data allow a better understanding of standing trees’ mechanical properties and their role in reducing natural gravitational hazards.
