This data describes velocity measurements at Vernagtferner, located in the southern Oetztal Alps, Austria. The glacier covers an area of approximately 6 km² and can be divided into three areas: the western part, called Schwarzwandzunge, the middle part, known as Taschach area, and the Brockogel area in the eastern part. An existing network of drilled stakes has been installed at Vernagtferner since 1966, their position is measured annually in-situ in September. Additional data is also available for the period 2018-2023, which is not part of the long-term stake network and only covers the eastern part of the glacier (Taschach and Brochkogel area). This data is generated manually from feature tracking of various data (as described in the dataset) or through in-situ stake measurements. A velocity map was interpolated from all available data for the period 2018-2023, for the eastern and middle part of Vernagtferner (Taschach and Brochkogel area). It is not cut to a glacier boundary to allow the use for different years. The velocity map includes the velocity in northing and easting. Furthermore, information on the seasonal variation of velocity is provided by stakes measured at different times of the year.
