To study the development of public opinion during the year prior to the General Election and in the campaign itself, by using new techniques for high speed surveys.

Main Topics:

Variables A wide range of political perceptions and attitudes; voting.

This survey is a panel survey based upon three sources: the British Election Study, 1983 (SN:2005), the British Social Attitudes Survey, 1986 (SN:2315) and <i>Clones</i> (substitutes for individuals leaving the panel). Interlocking quota target weights taking account of Class, Age, Sex and Region (<i>CASR</i>) are applied, modifying the original weights, in order to make any analytic dataset conform to the same characteristics as the 1986 British Social Attitudes Survey.
