Dynamics of a New and High Performance Proton Conductor ZnADP.3H2O

DOI

We propose to measure the dynamics in ZnADP¿3H2O, a new and high performance material that exhibits proton conductivity as high as Nafion membranes, which is the best commercial proton conductor. We have already performed quasi-elastic measurements on AGNES (DE=100ueV, at JRR-3) and HFBS (DE=1ueV, at NIST), with results that indicate the existence of two relaxations with time scales of 5 ps and 100 ps. The former, which may be related to H2O molecules and NH4+ ions, is quite unusual in the sense that it appears in the wide temperature range between 100 and 300 K and the activation energy is very small at low temperatures. The 5ps relaxation is still unclear. The purpose of the proposed experiment on IRIS is to access the intermediate time-range between AGNES and HFBS and to elucidate the mechanism of the proton conductivity of ZnADP¿3H2O. We expect some tunneling motions as well.
