Abstract copyright UK Data Service and data collection copyright owner.

This dataset constitutes an index, arranged alphabetically by surname, of the names of justices of the peace occurring in certain records at The National Archives (TNA), London. This data was originally created as part of the preparation for B. D. Henning (ed) History of Parliament: the House of Commons 1660 - 1690 (London, 1983). The original index created on punched cards covered the period 1642-1700. However, the surviving punched cards converted into a machine readable form by History Data Service only cover the period 1669-1699.

Main Topics:

The majority of names listed in this data set are in the Crown Office Docquet Books covering the years 1669 to 1699. In addition to the Docquet Books this index includes a list in the Privy Council Minute Book for 1686 of recommendations of changes to the commission of the peace and appointment of town JPs listed in the Crown Office Entry Book of Commissions. Data includes name, whether added or removed from the bench, date, county or town, and source.
