Copy of: High Energy Electronic Excitations in CoO

DOI

following on the success of measuring the electronic excitation in NiO using MAPS, we wish to make similar but more extended measurements of the electronic excitations in CoO Our recent measurements of the spin and orbital modes of CoO on MAPS have studied the excitations up to an energy of 90 meV. In order to unambiguously understand the electronic ground state we need measurements of the higher crystal field levels up to an energy of about 3 eV. We shall use a single crystal sample for the measurements and also measure the shape of the form factor to determine the nature of the different orbitals. Calculations and experiment have predicted that for CoO the form factor is extended in the [111] direction compared with the [100] direction.
