Tutkimuksessa kiinnostuksen kohteina olivat mm. kansalaisten käsitykset ulkopolitiikan hoidosta ja aseellisesta maanpuolustuksesta. Vastaajalta kysyttiin myös henkilökohtaista mielipidettä sotilaallisesta liittoutumisesta, puolustusvoimille myönnettävistä varoista, kotimaisesta puolustusvälineteollisuudesta, asevelvollisuudesta sekä Suomen ja suomalaisten turvallisuuteen vaikuttavista ilmiöistä. Taustamuuttujina olivat vastaajan sukupuoli, ikäryhmä, sosiaaliryhmä, koulutus, asuinpaikka ja asuinalue.

The survey studied Finnish citizens' views on, for example, armed defence and the country's foreign policy. The respondents were also asked to state their personal opinions on military alliances, Finnish Defence Forces funding, domestic defence industries, and the conscription army. Background variables included the respondent's gender, age group, economic activity, type of municipality of residence, basic education, vocational education, household gross income, number of children, number of household members, region and province of residence, which party R would vote for if the parliamentary elections were held at that time, and which party R had voted for in the 1996 municipal elections.
