MHC I exon 2 and 3 sequencing in gray and harbor seals

This study aimed to characterize genetic diversity of the major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class I gene family in gray and harbor seals. In particular, sequences were generated for exons 2 and 3, which encode the peptide binding region. The study was motivated by observations of differential disease susceptibility between these two sympatric pinniped species, and a desire to increase our understanding of evolutionary forces affecting the seals' immune systems.
