To obtain information about readers' use of library facilities in Wales, and their preference with regard to Welsh books.

Main Topics:

Attitudinal/Behavioural Questions Data given for Welsh speakers include: access to library or frequency and convenience of library van visits, whether librarian speaks Welsh, whether there are considered to be enough Welsh books in library (3-point scale - if respondent would like to see more Welsh books, he is asked to state what kind). Information is included on borrowing habits (i.e. number of books borrowed each time, number of Welsh books borrowed, whether borrow for self or other). Information on Welsh reading habits includes: type of novels read (4 categories), type of non-fiction books read (3 categories - if respondent does not read Welsh books, reason is given), newspaper and magazine readership (12 categories) and number of Welsh books purchased per annum. Data for non-Welsh speakers include: favourite fiction authors, attitudes towards number of Welsh books in local library (3-point scale) and, if learning - or wishing to learn - Welsh, whether books on learning Welsh are available at local library and whether respondent thinks there should be a special section for beginners in Welsh. Background Variables Place of survey, occupation of respondent (together with age if still at school) and whether Welsh is first or second language.
