Lattice vibrations of hydrogen impurities in a solid neon matrix

DOI

In recent incoherent inelastic neutron scattering experiments we have shown that the anharmonic single-particle dynamics of H2 can be measured with high precision in quantum solids using TOSCA. By this instrument we have studied the phonon spectral density of pure solid p-H2 and solid isotopic mixtures of p-H2 and n-D2.We now turn our attention to solid Ne containing 2% mol. of p-H2 impurities. At this concentration the two elements form a single phase which crystallises with an fcc structure, rather simpler than in the p-H2+n-D2, where the non-Bravaisian hcp structure determines a more complex p-H2 defect density of states, difficult to be accurately analysed. On the other hand, the less quantum character of Ne with respect to D2, together with their similar interparticle potentials, makes the p-H2-in-Ne system an ideal benchmark for studying the quantum defect mode dynamics.
