The quasi-1D spin chain compound Sr3NiIrO6 with TN1=70 K (TN2=20 K) exhibits spin-orbital entanglement Ising exchange with anisotropic exchange interaction [1-3]. The neutron powder diffraction studies cannot distinguish between two possible magnetic structures, (1) amplitude modulation antiferromagnetic (AFM) where all spin-chains (Ni-Ir moments) are magnetically ordered, and (2) the partially ordered AFM structure, where 2/3 spin-chains are magnetic ordered, but1/3 chains remains disordered down to 2 K [3]. Here we proposed to carry out nuclear forward scattering of synchrotron radiation (NFSSR) using the 67.4 keV Mössbauer transition of 61Ni to identify the correct magnetic structure of Sr3NiIrO6.
