Water structure in 'water-in-salt'and 'water-in-bisalt' electrolytes

DOI

In a recent experiment (6-02-593) we measured the structure of two promising systems to be used as aqueous electrolytes in batteries, using D4 and D7. Initially, we measured in D7 a highly concentrated solution of LiTFSI in water at 21 m (water-in-salt) and an even higher concentration of LiTFSI 21 m and LiOTf 7 m in water (water-in-bisalt), using both H2O and D2O. The same samples have been recently measured on D4 (February 2020) together with a sample at a lower concentration (LiTFSI 13.9 m), as the D7 data indicated some interesting differences with respect to our MD simulations which could be more visible at lower concentrations. Therefore, for completeness, we would like to measure also these 2 samples (LiTFSI in H2O and LiTFSI in D2O at a concentration of 13.9 m) in D7, where the purely coherent signal can be extracted directly and a first difference of the samples with H2O/D2O can provide direct insight into the ordering around the water hydrogen. Furthermore, lower Q values are accessible, nicely complementing D4, where the incoherent scattering complicates the analysis of the samples containing H2O.
