The closely related LiHoF4 and LiErF4 compounds have attracted a lot of interest as the dipolarnature of the coupling between spins allows for the study of quantum phase transitions. Our workis concerned with understanding the low-temperature physics of LiYbF4 which is expected to be arealisation of an XY dipolar-coupled antiferromagnet. Our proposal focuses on carrying out inelastic neutron scattering measurements to extract accurate crystal field parameters of LiYbF4 to help us quantify our existing experimental data. To this end we would like to measure a single crystal of LiYbF4 using MERLIN spectrometer to tightly constrain the crystal field parameters.
