Clarion Clipperton Zone Nodules and Sediment

In-situ benthic chamber experiments at the polymetallic nodule covered abyssal seafloor revealed O2 rising to more than three times the background concentration over the course of two days in 95% of experiments. Dark oxygen production (DOP) was detected at multiple sites across the Pacific and was observed in ex-situ 28 incubations, including in the presence of only nodules.
