Toward real-space studies of magnetic correlations

DOI

We have recently derived the foundational equations for magnetic pair distribution function (mPDF) analysis, a novel approach to studying short-range magnetic correlations by Fourier transforming the magnetic scattering signal from momentum space to real space. We propose to use polarized neutrons on D7 to investigate the short-range magnetic correlations in the spin glass CuMn and the spin-ice Ho2Ti2O7. These measurements will allow us to verify the reliability of mPDF analysis performed with polarized neutrons and will play an important role in the development of this promising new technique.
