Abstract copyright UK Data Service and data collection copyright owner.Highly qualified people are defined as those with higher degrees, first degrees and intermediate level qualifications generally obtained at age 18 years and over (above GCE 'A' level standard and below UK first degree standard). The objectives of this research project were: 1. To make use of the 1991 Census of Population data on qualifications, occupation and industry, alongside data from other sources, to provide a new body of statistical information on the distribution and characteristics of the highly qualified in Britain. 2. To contribute to an enhanced understanding of the distribution (in occupational, industrial and spatial terms), of people with higher-level qualifications, thereby informing labour market and local economic development theory and policy.

Main Topics: Higher level qualifications by occupation and industry.
