Conductivity, temperature, and depth measurements at the RMS Titanic wreck and a seamount ridge in the deep waters of the western North Atlantic in summer 2022

DOI

To gain information on the physical parameters of deep water in the western North Atlantic, CTD measurements were taken during seven dives to the RMS Titanic wreck (front of bow section approx. 41.7330181, -49.9460561; 3,816 m water depth) and one dive to a newly-explored seamount ridge (approx. 41.5980514, -49.4386889; 2,896 m water depth) during the OceanGate 2022 Titanic Expedition aboard the AHTS Horizon Arctic, 15 June - 25 July 2022. The ridge is part of Seamount U in Pe-Piper et al. (2007). The CTD measurements of the water column down to a maximum water depth of 3,853 m were conducted using a Valeport MIDAS SVX2 6000 unit attached to the submersible Titan for the duration of each dive and provided standard data for conductivity, temperature, and pressure. Conductivity and temperature data were used to compute salinity.CAUTION: Please note the values for dive 0073 were transcribed so that temperature and salinity values are rounded to the nearest whole number. More precise data are not available. For the rest of the dataset, most artifacts have been removed though some remain in temperature and salinity measurements in the shallow (~0-50 m) parts of dive 0075 and 0080 profiles. Accepted international oceanographic standards for corrections of temperature and salinity data (e.g., Thermodynamic Equation of Seawater-2010; McDougall and Barker, 2011), based on pre- and/or post-cruise calibration details for the CTD instrument, have not been applied to this dataset. Appropriate corrections would need to be applied before use and therefore this dataset should be considered with caution in any analyses. Published data are limited to CTD measurements that have a corresponding geoposition.
