The meteorological observatory Polarstern continuously performs radiosoundings during times of ship operation. Typically, there is one launch to full altitude at 12 UTC every day. Additionally, there often is a launch with a smaller balloon for forecasting purposes (helicopter operations) around 6 UTC. All data reports are distritubed via global networks of the World Meteorological Organisation. All data published here is generally as recorded. Data affected by known technical issues are not contained in this record.
The launch site is located 10m above sea level. The first row of each sounding holds surface data for TTT, RH, ff and dd, which is not acquired by the radiosonde. The measuring height of TTT and RH is 29m, and 39m for dd and ff. The first pressure value of each profile is derived from surface pressure measuements, reduced to the indicated altitude.
